About the common bream
The common bream (Abramis brama) is a freshwater fish of the carp family (Cyprinidae) found throughout Europe. In Lithuania it is abundant in lakes, ponds, slow-flowing rivers and their backwaters. The body is deep, strongly compressed laterally and covered with large scales; the back is dark greyish or greenish, and the silvery flanks take on a bronze tint with age. Bream feed on bottom-dwelling invertebrates, can reach several kilograms in weight and live in shoals.
Nutritional value
Bream flesh is lean to medium-fat. It is high in protein and contains B vitamins, phosphorus and potassium.
Fishing seasonality
Bream are at their fattest and tastiest in late autumn and winter, when they build up reserves. In spring, before spawning, the fish are also active. Size and weight depend on the water body and the age of the individual fish.
Culinary notes
Bream is especially prized smoked, either hot or cold, when it acquires a rich aroma. It is also fried, stewed or marinated. It pairs well with lemon, dill, onions, garlic and slightly sour side dishes, which help balance its richness.
